The seLictive recovery Hub: Lithium-Ion Battery recovery at a New Level
At seLictive recovery, we call our recovery centers "HUBs." The world's first HUB has been built centrally in the heart of Europe – in the Frankfurt am Main metropolitan area (Germany), just about 40 kilometers from Frankfurt International Airport.
On a 1,000-square-meter site, we can recover up to 2,000 tons of lithium-ion battery cells per year in an initial expansion stage with four seLictive Fragmentation Units (SFU). This allows us to recover lithium, aluminum, and copper for a sustainable value chain. Additionally, we are producing, for the first time at production scale, a black mass with a purity and composition that has been virtually unattainable until now.
Outside the EU, the first hub in the automotive city of Detroit, Michigan, USA, is currently under preparation and is expected to begin operations by the end of 2025 with a capacity of 24.000 t of lithium-ion battery cells per year.
Why are seLictive recovery locations called Hubs?
The term “Hub” reflects two key aspects: first, it highlights that we are one (albeit perhaps the most crucial) building block in a truly sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries. Second, it emphasizes how quickly we can establish new locations and scale the process of what is likely the most environmentally friendly lithium-ion battery recovery method in the world.
